The project was already about a year behind schedule after the contractor halted work, blaming staffing shortages. Now, Brevard County officials say crews are fixing problems involving pavement grading, drainage systems, and curbs along Wickham Road.
The county said the original contract was valued at nearly $900,000 and that more than $445,000 had already been paid to the contractor before work came to a stop. Payments were suspended after the contractor abandoned the project.
Drivers traveling through the construction zone said the delays and ongoing work have become a major frustration. One frustrated driver stated that “It’s always been a mess. Now it’s even worse,”
Some residents also questioned how the contractor was chosen and whether taxpayers may end up covering additional expenses caused by the repairs and delays. County officials said the contractor could ultimately be required to reimburse the county depending on the final cost of correcting the defective work.
Despite the setbacks, the county said crews are continuing efforts to complete the project and hope the roads and new turn lanes will be open within the next month.
